A major collision involving several vehicles on the TF-1 motorway near Güímar, heading towards Santa Cruz de Tenerife, caused significant traffic delays last night, Sunday.

Emergency services (SUC) confirmed that a total of 11 people were treated at the scene. Of these, eight were transferred to different medical centres and hospitals for further care, while three were treated at the site of the accident.

The incident led to heavy tailbacks in the area, with the Canary Islands emergency coordination centre (1-1-2) urging drivers to exercise caution due to the traffic disruption.

The Guardia Civil were in charge of controlling the traffic, while the fire brigade ensured the vehicles were safe and assisted Cabildo Road Maintenance crews in clearing the debris.

A police investigation into the cause of the incident is under way.

Road safety reminder

Motorways in Tenerife, particularly the TF-1 linking the south with the capital, can become heavily congested, especially at weekends and during holiday periods. Authorities are reminding motorists and visitors to:

  • Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
  • Avoid sudden lane changes and respect speed limits.
  • Stay alert for slowing or stopped traffic ahead.
  • Ensure all passengers wear seatbelts at all times.
  • Allow extra travel time when using busy routes such as the TF-1.

Tourists driving hire cars are also advised to familiarise themselves with local road rules and be especially cautious on unfamiliar roads.
