Mogán, on the south-west coast of Gran Canaria, is considering new measures to become a more welcoming destination to visitors and residents who wish to enjoy the beach with their dogs.

Across the EU, there are around 73 million households with a dog, a vast market that Mogán has so far missed out on, as dogs are currently prohibited on all of the municipality’s beaches.

Responding to growing demand, Mogán Town Hall is now working on plans to officially designate areas where dogs will be allowed.

Studying examples from elsewhere

Willy García, Councillor for Beaches, explained that the council is reviewing regulations from other Canary Island municipalities where dogs already have access to beaches.

“We are assessing different models that allow good coexistence between people with and without pets,” he said. “In some beaches, a specific zone could be reserved exclusively for dogs, while in others, their circulation might be completely free.”

Public consultation

To shape the plans, the council is asking for input from local residents. A public meeting has been scheduled for Monday 1st September at 7:30pm at Playa El Perchel beach, by the lifeguard base.

“It’s not just about opening up spaces,” García stressed. “We also want to understand what is really necessary to ensure that pets, their owners, and other beachgoers all have a positive experience.”

If approved, the move would position Mogán as a more pet-friendly destination, potentially boosting its appeal to millions of European families who want to holiday with their four-legged companions.
