A 30-year-old man died yesterday afternoon (Sunday), after being pulled from the water showing signs of drowning in the Los Charcones area of Yaiza, on the southwest coast of Lanzarote.
The emergency coordination centre (CECOES) received an alert at 5:30pm, reporting that the man had been rescued from the water in cardiac arrest after ingesting a large amount of seawater. Basic CPR was immediately started by those present until medical teams arrived.
SUC medical personnel continued advanced resuscitation procedures, but despite their efforts, they were unable to revive him and his death was confirmed at the scene.
Local Police and the Guardia Civil also attended, taking charge of the corresponding reports.
Safety reminder for visitors
Los Charcones, located near Playa Blanca, is a rugged coastal area known for its natural rock pools. While popular with some locals and adventurous visitors, the zone is not recommended for swimming due to unpredictable waves, slippery rocks, and the lack of lifeguard supervision.
Authorities once again urge both residents and tourists to:
- Only swim on beaches with lifeguard services.
- Avoid unmarked or rocky bathing areas.
- Always check sea conditions before entering the water.
- Call 1-1-2 immediately in case of emergency.
