Another round of the infamous “sunbed wars” has been caught on camera in Tenerife, after a furious tourist accused fellow holidaymakers of “stealing” her place by the pool, despite her having ‘reserved’ it earlier with a towel.

The row erupted at the resort poolside, where the woman, dressed in a red top and dark shorts, was filmed angrily pointing and shouting at a group of holidaymakers she believed had taken her spot. At one point, she even confronted another guest relaxing in the pool, escalating the row further.

The heated exchange is the latest example of a common holiday headache: the fight for prime poolside positions. With sunbeds often in short supply, many tourists get up at dawn to reserve their favourite spots with towels – a practice frowned upon by hotels but difficult to control.

A global holiday phenomenon

So-called “sunbed wars” are not unique to the Canary Islands, but they do frequently make headlines here, given the islands’ popularity with UK and European tourists. Similar disputes have been reported by Metro in resorts across Spain, Greece, and beyond.

According to recent research, holidaymakers from the West Midlands are most likely to admit to reserving loungers with towels, while those from the West Country and Yorkshire and the Humber were found to be the most considerate, with only 8% admitting to the habit.

Hotel policies vary

While some hotels enforce strict rules against reserving sunbeds, others turn a blind eye. In some resorts, staff have even been spotted removing towels left out too early in the morning.

Guests are generally encouraged to be considerate of others and to remember that poolside loungers are meant to be shared fairly among all guests.
