Government announces mass screening this weekend in Santa Cruz, La Laguna and Granadilla

The Minister of Health of the Canary Islands, Blas Trujillo, announced today the three new measures the Ministry of Health will introduce to reverse the pandemic in Tenerife. He said that the measures will consist of a massive screening campaign this weekend, in addition to a massive 24-hour vaccination campaign, and an early detection response strategy to analyze virus mutations in less than 24 hours and changes in how transmissive it is.

The screening campaign will be carried out in the three most infected areas on the island in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, La Laguna, and in Granadilla de Abona in the south of the island. These three areas will be screened due to their high risk incidence of Covid he explained.

The screening will affect a total of 53,947 people, with the one that will take place in the Barranco Grande in Santa Cruz covering a total of 28,934 people; that of La Cuesta in La Laguna screening 16,341 people, and that in Granadilla de Abona testing 8,979 people. The screenings will be with antigen tests primarily, and in the case of testing positive, will be ratified with PCR tests.

In addition, from 8am on Sunday July 4th, a massive 24-hour vaccination campaign will begin until 8am on Monday July 5th in the Santiago Martín Pavilion in La Laguna, for people aged between 40 and 59 years old (born between 1972 and 1981) who haven’t yet been vaccinated, with a target of 12,000 people in one day, explained the Trujillo.

In addition, screenings will be extended to other health areas including Arona, Vilaflor and other high risk areas that will be announced in the next few days.
