According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, the Canary Islands have experienced an increase in cases today, but not to the levels experienced in the fifth wave of the virus so far, with 671 new cases and five Covid related deaths, all of them in Tenerife, three women aged 56, 57 and 69 years old and two men of 44 and 56 years old. This means that 16 people have now died in the last four days.
Of the new cases, 346 are in Tenerife, 275 are in Gran Canaria, 17 are in Fuerteventura, 17 in Lanzarote, 9 in La Palma, 5 in La Gomera, and 2 are in El Hierro. Today active cases actually reduced slightly, as there were more people medically discharged (674) than new cases.
The Ministry of Health has addressed the question from people that don’t fully understand the situation of the pandemic, by answering the question they repeatedly ask: “What’s the point of me getting vaccinated if there are people that have had the jab that are catching Covid?”
They have explained that an increase in number of cases will occur in the vaccinated population as it is a matter of simple statistics: if the vast majority of the population is going to be vaccinated in the next few weeks, the expectation is that, obviously, the number of infections among those immunized will grow, because total protection does not exist as the vaccines have an efficacy of 90% plus.
Therefore, no matter how many people get vaccinated, there will always be cases of infections among those inoculated. But that reasoning is not so obvious for anti-vaxxers. In fact, in the Ministry of Health there is much concern about the expected campaign of the deniers, who for years, long before the appearance of Covid, have used this paradox as one of their main arguments in the final phases of the mass immunizations.
The Ministry went on to use this analogy: “Imagine the MMR vaccine against measles, which works very well. In a school there are 100 children, 95 are vaccinated and 5 are not. Let's imagine that the virus infects 7 of those vaccinated and 5 not vaccinated. If we look at the cases, it could be stated, and it would be true, that most of the cases have occurred among those vaccinated, but if we look at it as a percentage of the population, 100% of the unvaccinated would have been infected, compared to 7% of those vaccinated”.
It all depends on how you look at the data. These vaccines have a very high protection, but it is not total. The more people we vaccinate, the more frequent the cases are vaccinated, because it will be much more frequent in the population to be immunized, until we reach herd immunity.
