In a significant move towards more sustainable fashion practices, Spanish retail giant Zara has announced its forthcoming entry into the second-hand clothing market in Spain. Zara Pre Owned, the company's platform for buying and selling pre-owned Zara clothing and accessories, is set to make its debut soon, with a confirmed launch before the end of 2023.
This revelation was made by Óscar García Maceiras, the CEO of Inditex, during the III Retail and FMCG Forum, organized by El Economista. Zara Pre-Owned is designed to promote the extension of clothing lifecycles, reduce fashion waste, and encourage responsible consumption by facilitating the resale of Zara products.
Importantly, Zara will not be selling used items directly to customers but will instead serve as a platform for people to sell their pre-owned Zara clothing, shoes, and accessories. This initiative provides an opportunity for customers to declutter their wardrobes while earning extra income and offers buyers a chance to access Zara fashion at more affordable prices than traditional retail, including rare and previously sold-out items.
Having successfully operated in the UK since November last year and having recently launched in France just over a month ago, Zara Pre Owned is set to expand further into international markets. In this regard, Óscar García Maceiras emphasized, "We are determined to continue investing as necessary for the sustainable future growth of the group."
Zara's foray into the pre-owned fashion market signifies a notable shift in the fashion industry towards more sustainable and responsible practices, contributing to global efforts to combat the fashion industry's environmental impact.
The eagerly anticipated launch of Zara Pre Owned in Spain underlines the brand's commitment to fostering a circular economy and reducing the environmental footprint associated with fashion consumption.
