Guests at a hotel in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote, were briefly evacuated this morning (Saturday) after a fire broke out during maintenance work. According to hotel sources, the incident occurred while workers were carrying out repairs on a ventilation duct.
Operatives were using an angle grinder to cut into the duct when a build-up of dust and lint inside the system ignited, producing flames and smoke in the area. As a precaution, the hotel director immediately ordered the evacuation of guests while emergency services were alerted.
Firefighters quickly attended the scene and located the source of the fire on the seventh floor of the building. Crews used water and foam to cool the area and bring the situation under control.
Although access to the ventilation duct made the operation slightly more complicated, firefighters confirmed the fire was contained rapidly and at no point posed a risk to guests or staff.
Once the fire had been fully extinguished and the area made safe, guests were allowed to return to the hotel.
Both the hotel management and emergency services highlighted the swift response of staff and firefighters, which prevented the incident from spreading or causing more serious damage.
