Two men have been arrested in Puerto del Rosario after allegedly kidnapping a victim and attempting to force them to withdraw money from a cash machine to pay a supposed debt.

Local Police officers detained the suspects yesterday morning (Monday) after catching them in the act at a bank in the centre of the capital of Fuerteventura. According to authorities, the two men, who have been identified by their initials as R.C.R.T., 38, and S.A.A., 46, are both Spanish nationals and are suspected of kidnapping and attempted extortion.

Investigators say the victim had been held against his will throughout Sunday, after being locked inside a property in the town.

The following morning, the alleged captors reportedly took the victim to a bank branch in central Puerto del Rosario. Under pressure and close supervision, the victim was allegedly being forced to withdraw cash from their account to settle what the suspects claimed was an outstanding debt.

However, officers from the Puerto del Rosario Local Police intervened and surprised the suspects while the incident was unfolding, leading to their immediate arrest.

After being taken into custody, the two men were handed over to the National Police, who have opened an official investigation and prepared the case file.

Both suspects have since been placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities, who will determine the next steps in the case.

Authorities have not released further details about the victim or the circumstances surrounding the alleged debt.
