Hazy conditions caused by calima and rising temperatures are expected across the Canary Islands today, Friday, with strong winds forecast in some areas as the weekend approaches, according to the State Meteorological Agency, AEMET.
Dust from the Sahara is expected to affect much of the archipelago, with the most noticeable calima likely in higher areas of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, as well as mountain peaks and southern slopes of the mountainous islands.
Daytime temperatures are forecast to rise slightly to moderately, with more noticeable increases possible on southwest-facing slopes. Minimum temperatures will remain largely unchanged, although a slight increase cannot be ruled out in some areas.
Cloudy intervals may appear in the north and northeast of the mountainous islands, particularly later in the day, but skies across the rest of the islands are expected to remain mostly clear or sunny, especially during the central hours.
Winds will be moderate from the northeast along the coasts, while strong easterly winds are expected in mid-altitude areas and on mountain peaks, where very strong gusts are possible on southern and western slopes. Winds are forecast to strengthen in lower areas later in the day, with those at higher altitudes turning more northeasterly.
At sea, conditions will include northeast winds of force 4 to 6, producing moderate to rough seas, along with a north or northeast swell of around one to two metres.
Island-by-island forecast for Friday 13th March 2026:
Tenerife
The island will see mostly clear or sunny skies, although cloudy intervals may appear in the north and northwest later in the day. Calima will mainly affect higher areas and southern slopes.
Maximum temperatures will rise slightly to moderately, with more noticeable increases possible on the southwest slopes and in mid-altitude areas in the north. Minimum temperatures will remain stable or rise slightly. Light frost is possible on the highest central peaks.
Winds will be moderate from the northeast at lower levels, while strong easterly winds are expected in mid-altitude areas and on mountain peaks during the morning, with occasional very strong gusts possible on the central summits and along the dorsal ridge. These winds may extend down the northwest slopes. During the afternoon, winds will strengthen in lower areas, with very strong gusts possible in the far northwest and along the southeast coast.
General temperatures: Low of 15°C and high of 23°C.
Gran Canaria
Skies will be mostly clear, with some cloud forming later in the north below 700–800 metres. Calima will be more noticeable on mountain peaks and southern slopes.
Minimum temperatures will change little or rise slightly, while daytime highs will increase slightly to moderately, particularly on the southwest-facing slopes.
Moderate northeast winds will affect coastal areas, while strong easterly winds are expected in mid-altitude zones and mountain areas during the first half of the day, with the possibility of very strong gusts on southern and northwestern slopes. Winds are forecast to strengthen later in lower areas, with strong gusts possible along the southeast coast and the far west.
General temperatures: Low of 15°C and high of 22°C.
Lanzarote
Skies will be mostly clear, although some cloudy intervals may develop in the north late in the day. Calima will affect the island, particularly at higher altitudes.
Temperatures will see little change overnight, with slightly to moderately warmer daytime highs. Winds will be moderate from the northeast, occasionally becoming strong and turning easterly in higher areas during the middle of the day. Winds may strengthen again later in the evening, when very strong gusts are possible inland in the southern half of the island.
General temperatures: Low of 15°C and high of 24°C.
Fuerteventura
Conditions will remain mostly clear, although calima will be present, especially in higher areas.
Temperatures are expected to rise slightly to moderately, with notable increases possible in maximum temperatures on the western side of the island. Winds will be moderate from the northeast, with stronger intervals in higher areas and on the west coast, particularly during the first half of the day when locally strong gusts may occur. Winds will strengthen along eastern and western coastal areas later in the day.
General temperatures: Low of 16°C and high of 23°C.
