A 55-year-old man is in serious condition after being rescued from the sea on Friday afternoon at Playa de Mogán in Gran Canaria. Emergency services confirmed the man suffered a head injury and signs of drowning when he was first attended to at the scene.

The Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received the alert at 4:08pm after reports that a group of people had pulled an unconscious man from the water. Early information suggests the man may have fallen into the sea from a rocky area nearby.

CPR Started by Bystanders

Before emergency teams arrived, witnesses at the scene began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an attempt to revive the man.

When paramedics arrived they continued with advanced resuscitation manoeuvres, assisted by a doctor and nurse from the Mogán Health Centre.

After successfully stabilising the patient, emergency teams transferred him to a medicalised ambulance and rushed him to the Hospital Universitario Insular de Gran Canaria due to the seriousness of his condition.

The incident triggered a large emergency operation coordinated by the 112 service. Teams involved in the rescue included Beach Lifeguards, the Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium, and Civil Protection volunteers.

Meanwhile, the Local Police and the Guardia Civil secured the area. A Guardia Civil traffic unit also escorted the ambulance to the hospital to ensure a rapid transfer for the critically injured man.
