Residents and tourists in Gran Canaria are being reminded that many shops and businesses will be closed tomorrow (Tuesday, 8th September) as the island celebrates the public holiday of Nuestra Señora del Pino.

The annual celebration of Our Lady of the Pine, the patron saint of Gran Canaria, is one of the most important dates in the island's calendar and is an official public holiday across the island.

As a result, anyone planning a shopping trip tomorrow should be aware that 8th September is not one of the authorised public holidays on which shops are generally permitted to open in Gran Canaria in 2026.

The Canary Islands Government sets the Sundays and public holidays each year when retailers are authorised to trade, with the permitted dates varying between islands.

Exceptions in tourist shopping areas

There are exceptions to the general restrictions, particularly for businesses located within designated tourist areas such as Mogan or Maspalomas, that have special opening arrangements.

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, there are five designated areas where different rules can apply.

Two are authorised for special opening throughout the year, while three others operate under the arrangement only during the cruise season, which runs from 1st October to 30th April.

These seasonal areas include Mesa y López and the area surrounding the Las Arenas shopping centre.

Certain types of businesses may also be exempt from normal Sunday and public-holiday trading restrictions.

However, shoppers should expect widespread retail closures across Gran Canaria tomorrow and are advised to check directly with individual shops or shopping centres before travelling.

Which Sundays and public holidays can shops open?

Gran Canaria has ten authorised Sundays and public holidays for general retail opening during 2026.

These are 4th January, 2nd April, 30th May, 15th August, 2nd and 29th November, and 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th December.

Tuesday, 8th September, is not included on that list.

The public holiday is centred around Teror, where thousands of people traditionally gather for celebrations honouring the Virgen del Pino.

For tourists staying in Gran Canaria, the holiday does not mean that everything on the island will shut down. Bars, restaurants, hotels and many businesses serving tourists may continue operating, but anyone specifically planning a day of shopping should check opening times beforehand.
