Five people have been injured after the car they were travelling in left the road and overturned on the TF-65 in San Miguel de Abona, in the south of Tenerife.

The accident happened at approximately 12:10am today (Tuesday), prompting a significant response from the Canary Islands emergency services.

The Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES 112) received an alert reporting that a car had left the TF-65 before overturning.

The Servicio de Urgencias Canario (SUC), firefighters and the Guardia Civil were subsequently dispatched to the scene of the incident.

Despite the severity of the accident, all five occupants had managed to get out of the overturned vehicle themselves before firefighters arrived.

Fire crews secured the car, which had come to rest completely upside down, and assisted the other emergency services working at the scene. Three ambulances were sent to deal with the casualties.

Two children among those injured

The most seriously injured person was a 36-year-old woman, who suffered moderate trauma to a lower limb and was taken to Hospital del Sur for further treatment.

A 35-year-old man suffered minor facial injuries and was also transferred to Hospital del Sur.

Two children were travelling in the vehicle. A four-year-old child suffered minor facial injuries and was taken to Hospital Universitario Hospiten Sur, while an eight-year-old suffered a minor open wound to a lower limb and was transferred to Hospital del Sur.

The fifth occupant, a 30-year-old woman, sustained minor trauma to an upper limb and was also taken to Hospiten Sur.

The Guardia Civil regulated traffic while emergency teams dealt with the incident and completed the corresponding accident report.

CECOES has not reported the cause of the crash, and its official statement does not give the nationalities of any of the occupants.

The accident happened on the TF-65, one of the roads serving San Miguel de Abona and surrounding areas in the south of Tenerife.

It is the latest incident to require a multi-agency emergency response on the island's roads, and once again highlights how even an accident in which occupants are able to escape a vehicle unaided can result in several people requiring hospital treatment.

Fortunately, according to the initial medical assessments released by 112 Canarias, none of the five occupants was reported as being in a serious or critical condition.
