Two men suspected of carrying out a series of burglaries across Tenerife have been arrested at Tenerife South Airport as they attempted to leave the island with suitcases full of stolen items.

Officers from the Guardia Civil and National Police detained the suspects, aged 30 and 37, on 12th March following an investigation into multiple break-ins at homes in several municipalities across the island.

The arrests came after victims reported the thefts, which had caused growing concern among residents in the affected areas. Acting on gathered evidence, officers intercepted the two men in the airport’s departure area, where they were allegedly preparing to leave Tenerife while carrying a number of items believed to have been stolen from different properties.

Burglaries Carried Out in Daylight

According to investigators, the suspects typically carried out the burglaries during daylight hours, targeting homes they had confirmed were empty.

Their method involved one of the men keeping watch on foot, while the other remained nearby in a car, monitoring the area before attempting to enter a property.

On several occasions, local residents noticed the suspects loitering near homes and attempting to gain access, prompting them to record the activity on their mobile phones. These recordings were later submitted to police along with formal complaints, helping officers identify and locate the suspects.

Jewellery and Cash Targeted

Once inside the homes, often after climbing to gain entry or forcing doors or windows, the suspects allegedly stole mainly high-value jewellery and cash.

Among the items taken were luxury watches, rings, necklaces and other valuables, many of which were recovered when the suspects were arrested.

Joint Police Investigation

The investigation involved officers from the Guardia Civil investigation units in Candelaria, Granadilla de Abona and La Orotava, as well as National Police officers from the Judicial Police unit specialising in property and economic crimes in the North District of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The Provincial Scientific Police Brigade also assisted in the case.

The two men have now been placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority.

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as officers work to determine the full extent of the suspects’ involvement in the burglaries and identify the rightful owners of the jewellery that has been recovered.
