VIDEO: Lifeguard intervenes as people ignore dangerous sea conditions in Tenerife

A lifeguard was forced to intervene after two people put themselves at risk by standing on rocks as powerful waves crashed nearby at Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife.

Footage shared on social media shows the pair remaining on the rocks despite the rough sea conditions. A lifeguard can then be seen approaching them to warn them of the danger and tell them to leave the area.

The incident highlights how quickly strong waves can turn a seemingly safe position on the coast into a potentially life-threatening situation.

Lifeguards have again urged people to stay away from rocks, breakwaters and exposed coastal areas whenever there is strong swell. A single unexpected wave can knock someone off their feet or sweep them into the sea.

The latest incident comes just three months after three people were caught by powerful waves at Playa Jardín despite a red flag being displayed. All three were rescued, although a 21-year-old man suffered moderate symptoms associated with a near-drowning and was taken to hospital for treatment.
