A suspected burglar has been arrested in Gran Canaria after a trail of blood led police directly to him, and officers later discovered he was already wanted by the courts.
Officers from the Policía Nacional in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria detained a 61-year-old man on suspicion of burglary following a break-in at a commercial premises in the historic Vegueta district.
According to police, the suspect was also subject to an active judicial order for search, arrest and court appearance issued by a court in the Gran Canaria capital.
Alarm raised after suspected break-in
The incident took place in the early hours of 9th March (Monday) when the police operations centre, CIMACC 091, received a call reporting a possible break-in at a shop in Vegueta.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the shop’s metal shutter partially raised and one of the doors showing clear signs of being forced open. Broken glass was also discovered around the lock area, indicating the premises had been entered using force.
Witness saw the suspect leaving injured
A witness nearby told officers they had heard loud noises and the sound of glass breaking. When they looked outside, they reportedly saw a man leaving the shop with a head injury and bleeding before walking away from the area.
Using the description provided, police launched a search of the surrounding streets and soon located a man just a short distance away who matched the witness account.
The suspect had visible facial injuries and traces of blood.
Arrest and court proceedings
After identifying the man and checking police databases, officers confirmed that he was subject to an outstanding court order for search and detention issued by a court in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He was immediately arrested on suspicion of burglary.
Once police procedures were completed, the suspect was brought before the relevant judicial authority.
