Yellow weather warning on three islands this Monday for thick haze

The yellow weather warning for the calima has been extended until 11:00pm tonight (Monday) in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria, due to haze and visibility less than 3,000 metres, with more flight interruptions yesterday, including some from the UK.

According to the air quality metre, in Arrecife, more than 700 milligrams of dust have been registered per cubic metre, which is fourteen times higher than the normal 50 milligrams.

Health experts have warned about the dangers of breathing the air at this time and advise people to wear a mask if going outside. Anyone with respiratory problems, such as asthma, or allergies are especially exposed to discomfort and may develop symptoms such as difficulty breathing, coughing, or eye irritation.

It is important that everyone takes precautionary measures to protect their health, such as keeping windows and doors closed and limiting outdoor activity.

The haze is expected to start decreasing tomorrow (Tuesday) and moving north, which will improve air quality on these islands, and on Wednesday there should be a noticeable change in the density of the haze as it leaves altogether.
