Woman arrested after threatening to shoot planes down at airport

The National Police have released details after arresting a 46-year-old woman in Malaga last week, after she contacted the airport operator AENA’s security department by telephone, stating that she intended to shoot down airplanes if air traffic at the Costa del Sol airport did not stop.

AENA alerted the police after the woman claimed to have weapons and enough ammunition to reach the planes, and threatened if air traffic in the area did not stop she would begin to shoot them down.

Bearing in mind the call was made during a busy period at the airport, at 11:00am on 3rd April, police quickly swung into action to trace the person who made the call activating a Level 4 anti-terrorist alert.

According to the police press release, it was possible to neutralise the threat and identify and arrest the alleged perpetrator a few hours later at 3:30pm without the need to evacuate the airport.

The woman was arrested and detained in custody charged with a crime of public disorder before being passed to the judicial authorities for sentencing.
