Warning for all Tourists and Residents: Emergency Drill on October 24th in Tenerife

The Canary Islands Government have announced that there will be an important emergency drill in Tenerife on Thursday, October 24th, involving every mobile phone on the island at that time whether owned by a resident or holidaymaker, and advising everyone to stay informed and be aware of what is going on.

The drill, led by Turismo de Canarias, aims to ensure that everyone on the island is aware of the simulated emergency and understands that it is a test of the alert system, not a real situation.

As part of the drill, all mobile phones on the island will receive an emergency alert at any time between 10:00am and 12:00pm on October 24th.

A loud alert will appear on the screen of every phone, and the sound will stop once the user presses "ACCEPT." If the phone’s language is set to something other than Spanish, the notification will automatically appear in English.

This prior warning has been issued to avoid panic, ensuring the public, especially tourists, are well-prepared and know that the drill is simply a test of the island’s Es-Alert emergency notification system.

This exercise is part of broader efforts to improve emergency preparedness and coordination on the island, ensuring that the local and tourist populations can be quickly informed in the event of a real emergency situation.

GOVERNMENT ADVICE:

This is just a DRILL, a simulation. You don’t need to do anything except tap the screen of your mobile to stop the sound.

If You Are Driving:

Stay calm and don’t do anything that could put you or other drivers at risk

Avoid sudden braking or abrupt lane-changing.

If You Are Caring for An Elderly Person:

The important thing is to stay calm and follow the instructions and advice that you will receive on your phone.
