Update on the Las Chafiras roadworks: the motorway bridge will be demolished

The president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Pedro Martín, has visited the work being carried out in Las Chafiras, in the south of the island, where the director of Road Infrastructure of the Canary Islands Government, José Luis Delgado, explained how the current work is progressing and what the next phase will entail.

"A new phase will begin shortly with the construction of an elevated roundabout, which begins with the installation of pillars on both sides of the motorway and in the central reservation, for which drilling work has already started," said the president, who added that, “later, to build the roundabout, the current bridge that joins the two sides of Las Chafiras will be demolished.

Martín also said that the construction of the new junctions and roundabout in the lower part of Las Chafiras, is already beginning to increase the flow of traffic in an area where a large number of vehicles pass through every day.

He explained that “the work now involves a very slow process due to the difficulty of working on a road through which more than 100,000 vehicles pass per day. Also, unlike other roads with lower traffic intensity, it is not possible to close one of the lanes to finish the work quicker, so the intention is to keep all four lanes of the TF-1 open at all times.

Along these lines, he explained that the work being carried out by the Canary Islands Government is tremendously complex because as well as the volume of traffic, there is the additional problem of electrical conduits, water pipes for public supply, and the conduction of purified water in the direction of San Lorenzo Valley.
