The fines you can get in a supermarket car park

Most supermarket chains have a private car park so that customers can park their vehicles and make purchases in their stores, then the normal thing, when you have finished shopping, is to take it to your car and then return the trolley to its correct place. However, many people choose to abandon it anywhere in the vicinity of the store because they cannot find a place to deposit it nearby.

This is something that we see many shoppers do when we go to the supermarket, especially if they haven’t had to use a coin to get a trolley, but this can work out very expensive as most people don’t realise that leaving a shopping trolley anywhere is punishable by a fine of 80 euros.

According to current regulations, it is governed by Article 4.2 of the General Circulation Regulations (RGC) even though it is a private space because it is used by the public. This regulation states that it is prohibited to "throw, deposit, or abandon any objects or materials on the road that may hinder circulation, stopping, or parking.”

This means that drivers can be penalized in the same way as on public roads. In Spain, including the Canary Islands, there are already several sentences that support this, with large fines also issued for parking in a disabled space.
