The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has released the summary of seismicity in the Canary Islands for 2022, a report that logged all the earthquakes that took place during the year.
In total, they recorded 3,241 earthquakes in the Canary Islands and its immediate surroundings. Of these, more than half (1,882), were registered in La Palma, related to the post-eruptive process of the island.
There were also over 400 tremors in the area between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, where the largest earthquake of the year occurred with a magnitude of 3.7 on the Richter scale.
Finally, more than 700 earthquakes were recorded in and around the island of Tenerife, and 36 in the area of the island of El Hierro.
3.4 magnitude tremor in El Hierro on Saturday:
The IGN recorded an earthquake of 3.4 magnitude in La Frontera yesterday morning (Saturday) at a depth of 19 kilometres.
This is the latest earthquake to be registered by the IGN in the last 24 hours in the Canary Islands, where only the island of La Palma is on a yellow traffic light for volcanic activity.
The IGN have also reported that there hasn’t been any seismic activity in La Palma for four days, since Wednesday, which is the first time in over a year, in fact, since 7th January last year.
