A taxi driver was arrested on Tuesday after testing positive for cocaine and THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, following an accident in which he ran over a 76-year-old woman in the La Laguna area of Tenerife. The woman sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the HUC Hospital for emergency treatment.
The La Laguna City Council have confirmed that disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against the driver. In addition, they have announced that the maximum penalties under municipal regulations will be enforced, potentially leading to the permanent revocation of the driver’s taxi license.
In response to this incident, the council plans to launch a new campaign targeting taxi drivers with more random and compulsory alcohol and drug tests in the coming days, with the goal of preventing similar incidents in the future.
The council also expressed its hopes for the victim's speedy recovery.
