Puertito de Adeje officially declared a geological site of interest

The Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME) has officially designated Puertito de Adeje, located in southern Tenerife, as a Geological Site of Interest (LIG) due to its unique volcanic formations. This recognition coincides with the planned construction of the Cuna del Alma tourist complex in the same area.

Covering 17.96 hectares (179,600m2), Puertito de Adeje has been added to the IGME inventory because it has "world-class outcrops" from two significant explosive volcanic eruptions from the Las Cañadas caldera, one called Fañabé in 1585, and the other called Adeje in 1559.

Heritage and Research Importance

The volcanic deposits in this area consist of layers of ash, pumice, and ignimbrites, formed by pyroclastic flows, which are known for their high destructiveness due to their speed and temperature.

According to the IGME, these formations are crucial for studying volcanic activity in Tenerife and assessing associated risks. The site is considered important not only for the geological heritage of the Canary Islands but also for gathering "new, vital data" for future research.

300,000 Years of Volcanic History

Puertito de Adeje is also adjacent to the La Caleta Scientific Site, creating a geological record of 300,000 years of explosive volcanic activity on the island. The area is easily accessible, making it ideal for scientific research, sustainable tourism, and educational excursions, emphasizing its educational and natural value.

The IGME has assigned the area a medium protection priority. While the risk of natural degradation is low, the site faces moderate risks from human activities. With this designation, Puertito de Adeje joins 48 other Geological Sites of Interest in Tenerife and a total of 4,547 across Spain.
