More marriages fail in the Canary Islands than anywhere else in Spain

The judicial authorities registered more marital breakups in the Canary Islands during the first three months of 2023 than anywhere else in Spain, with a rate of 65.4 per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the national average of 47.1 separations.

According to the report by the General Council's Judiciary statistical service (CGPJ), between January and March, the civil courts received 1,448 requests for separation, divorce, or marriage annulments, 5.4% more than in the same period of 2022 (1,374).

This places the Canary Islands ahead of Navarra (56.4) and Valencia (53.7), and according to data collected by the CGPJ, the Canaries have led this statistic since December 2019.

The national average is 18.3 points below the Canaries average, and nationally the number of requests for dissolutions, annulments, separations and divorces during the first quarter of 2023 was 22,647, which is a decrease of 10.3% compared to the same quarter of 2022.

However, the report also warns that the lawyers' strike, which lasted from January 23rd to March 28th, had an impact on the number of resolutions, and the number filed as there has been a surge in April.
