A man tragically drowned today (Saturday) at La Arenita Beach, in the El Palm Mar area of Arona, in the south of Tenerife. The incident was reported by the Canary Islands Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) after receiving a call for help at 2:00pm this afternoon.
They were alerted to the fact that two people were in the water and needed urgent assistance. One man was found floating face down, while the second person was having difficulty returning to shore because of the conditions.
Firefighters retrieved the man found floating, and after confirming he was in cardiac arrest, they immediately began resuscitation efforts. Emergency medical personnel continued life-saving measures, but sadly, they were unable to revive him, and his death was confirmed at the scene.
The second person, who was unharmed, eventually managed to reach land unaided. The SUC activated their Psychological Support Team to provide assistance to the survivor.
The Local Police assisted with the rescue, and the Guardia Civil are conducting an official investigation into the incident. A Helimer rescue helicopter and beach rescue personnel also participated in the operation.
