Homeowners in the Canary Islands can now claim up to €3,000 in subsidies and tax deductions for improving the energy efficiency of their main residence, thanks to an extension of the national renovation scheme published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE). The aim is to help families reduce energy bills, improve insulation and adapt their properties to EU environmental standards.
Under the current programme, the Spanish Government has renewed tax deductions for energy-efficient upgrades while keeping active the direct grants funded through the national Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia. In practice, homeowners can recover up to 40% of the renovation cost, up to a maximum of €3,000, provided the work totals at least €1,000.
What types of work qualify
Not all home improvements are eligible. The scheme covers upgrades that clearly improve a property’s energy performance. Typical examples include replacing old windows with insulated ones, improving the insulation of walls or roofs, installing solar panels or upgrading to more efficient heating and cooling systems. The property must be the applicant’s primary residence.
Energy requirements
To access the full subsidy, the renovation must achieve at least one of the following:
- A 30% reduction in non-renewable primary energy consumption, or
- A post-renovation energy rating of A or B.
In some cases, a minimum 7% reduction in heating and cooling demand is also required. The improvement must be proven through official certification.
Mandatory certificates
Applicants must provide an energy certificate before the work and another after completion, both issued using the same official software and signed by a qualified technician. Without these documents, the subsidy or tax deduction cannot be granted, even if the renovation genuinely improves efficiency.
Payment rules
Payments for the work must be made by bank transfer or card, directly to the company or professional carrying out the renovation. Cash payments automatically invalidate eligibility for tax deductions. Direct grants can be combined with other public subsidies, provided expenses are not duplicated and the total aid does not exceed the cost of the works.
Key deadlines
To apply the tax deduction in your annual income tax return, the renovation must be fully completed before 31st December of the relevant tax year.
For direct grants, all work must be finished before 30th June 2026, and the technical documentation must be submitted within three months of completion. Applications are processed in order of arrival, so submitting the paperwork early is essential.
