A 70-year-old man has been rescued and successfully resuscitated after suffering a cardiac arrest with signs of drowning after ingesting a large amount of seawater at Playa Torviscas Beach in Costa Adeje, in the south of Tenerife.

The incident occurred at 3:30pm this afternoon (Friday), when the Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received an urgent alert. According to reports, the man had been rescued from the water by a young British holidaymaker, unconscious and showing no signs of life.

According to eye-witness reports, two tourists started CPR until beach lifeguards arrived on the scene and took over in an effort to maintain the man’s vital signs while awaiting medical assistance.

Shortly afterwards, SUC paramedics arrived and continued with advanced resuscitation techniques, working intensively on the beach until they were able to successfully restore the man’s heartbeat.

Once stabilised, the patient was transported without delay in a medicalised ambulance to Hospital Universitario Hospiten Sur, where he remains in a critical condition.

Emergency services have once again highlighted the importance of rapid intervention in such incidents, with the swift actions of members of the public, lifeguards and paramedics proving crucial in saving the man’s life.
