A sea turtle has been rescued after becoming completely entangled in ropes off the north coast of Lanzarote, near Arrieta.
A group of young people travelling on a small boat spotted the turtle floating in the water yesterday (Tuesday). It was unable to swim because ropes had become tightly wrapped around its body.
The group brought the turtle aboard the boat before carefully cutting through the ropes with a knife. Once freed, it was returned to the sea.
The incident highlights the ongoing danger posed by discarded ropes, fishing lines, nets, and other marine waste to turtles and other wildlife around the Canary Islands.
However, environmental officials warn that people who find an injured or entangled turtle should contact the emergency services rather than attempt to free it themselves.
Lanzarote's environmental department advises anyone who finds a turtle trapped in plastic, nets or ropes to call 112 or the island's injured wildlife rescue service on 696 733 177. The animal's location and condition should be reported so trained environmental officers can respond.
Officials warn against completely untangling an animal without professional guidance. If ropes have restricted its circulation, removing them too quickly can cause serious complications when blood flow suddenly returns to the affected area.
People should also never pull on fishing line, rope or hooks that may have been swallowed, as this could cause serious internal injuries.
While waiting for help, turtles should be kept in the shade with a damp towel placed over the shell, without covering their eyes or nostrils. They should not be given food or water.
Anyone who encounters an injured or trapped marine animal around the Canary Islands is advised to call 112 and provide an accurate location so specialist assistance can be arranged.
