Two fugitives wanted by the Hungarian authorities over alleged large-scale drug trafficking offences have been arrested in the south of Tenerife.

The pair are suspected of helping to operate the largest cannabis plantation ever seized in Hungary. They could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

According to the National Police, the suspects and their alleged accomplices bought a property in Hungary to grow cannabis.

A search of the house in April 2025 uncovered 6,289 cannabis plants and 58 kilograms of dried cannabis, making it the country’s biggest seizure of its kind.

Investigators traced the two fugitives to Tenerife despite both having dramatically changed their appearance and allegedly using false identities to avoid detection.

A specialist police unit was involved in the arrest operation because of the suspects’ perceived risk, knowledge of martial arts and possible links to people involved in crime on the island.

Officers found the pair as they approached their vehicle. Police said both resisted arrest but were eventually detained and brought before a court.
