A 20-year-old man has died while freediving off the coast of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. His body was recovered from the sea following an extensive search by land, air and water.

Emergency services were alerted at around 7:00pm yesterday (Tuesday) after the young man failed to return from the water near the stretch of coastline between Puerto de Honduras and Punta Maragallo.

The search involved firefighters, the Port Authority, refinery emergency crews and the Maritime Rescue Service. Police officers also assisted with the operation.

Firefighters found the man in the sea and brought him ashore, where medical personnel confirmed his death.

A specialist emergency psychology team was called to support the victim’s relatives.

The National Police have taken charge of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
