Fernando Clavijo is officially sworn in as president of the Canary Islands

The leader of the Canary Islands Coalition (CC), Fernando Clavijo, has been officially sworn in as president of the Canary Islands in the first vote with the support of 38 deputies, the absolute majority of the plenary session of the regional Parliament, thanks to the pact reached with the CC, PP, ASG, and AHI.

Clavijo takes charge of the Government of the Canary Islands for the second time after being president from 2015 to 2019, before he lost it to Ángel Víctor Torres, who has ruled for the last four years during the pandemic, and who now, ironically, hands the ‘baton’ back to Clavijo.

Torres and the PSOE were the winners of the vote at the May 28 elections, but without the necessary majority to regain power, and subsequently were unable to gain enough support to form a pact either.

In his last speech before the plenary session before being sworn in, Clavijo said that the Canary Islands have historical challenges that must be faced with unity and that some issues transcend legislatures, such as the sustainability of public services, island imbalances, or poverty, adding "let us be able to agree.”

Regarding his government, which is expected to hold its first Governing Council meeting on Monday, he has said that it is a government of "comrades" of men and women who are going to work to achieve an entrepreneurial future for the Canary Islands, with the aim of discussing policies among ourselves, with the opposition, and with civilian society.

Clavijo thanked the parties that have supported the new government for having placed "the interest of the Canary Islands above the acronym and have assured that it will put the people at the centre of its decisions.”
