A Vueling flight from Barcelona to Fuerteventura was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Málaga yesterday, Monday, after a passenger suffered a suspected heart attack mid-flight.
According to Air Traffic Controllers, the plane was flying over Morocco when the crew requested an immediate diversion to ensure the passenger could receive urgent medical attention on the ground.
Air traffic controllers facilitated a continuous descent and coordinated a direct approach to Málaga Airport’s runway 31, despite the airport’s operational configuration at the time being set for arrivals on runway 12 and departures from runway 13, in the opposite direction.
To give the diverted flight priority, all departures were temporarily halted, and several arriving aircraft were instructed to hold north of the airport. Airport staff activated the emergency medical response, ready to assist as soon as the aircraft landed.
Once the Vueling flight touched down and the passenger was attended to, normal airport operations quickly resumed.
Air Traffic Controllers have wished the passenger a swift recovery and expressed gratitude to all flight crews involved for their cooperation during the incident.
