Nine earthquakes recorded in 18 hours in Lanzarote and Tenerife

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded nine earthquakes in the Canary Islands between Tuesday afternoon and midday today, Wednesday 4th November.

The strongest measured 2.4 magnitude on the Richter scale and was located in the Atlantic near Lanzarote, at a depth of around 17 kilometres.

Five of the nine were recorded around Tenerife, including three close together off the east coast. Another was located near El Hierro.

None of the nine had an intensity rating in the IGN data, indicating that nobody had reported feeling them. The figures are provisional and may be revised as the institute reviews its readings.

The activity off Tenerife’s east coast has appeared in the records on three consecutive days. The recent movements are small, and the information checked does not point to an emergency or a change in the islands’ volcanic alert status.

One event was listed with a depth of zero kilometres. That does not necessarily mean it happened at the surface: the IGN may use that figure when it cannot yet determine the depth precisely.
