Electric scooter on motorway in south of Tenerife sparks outrage and safety concerns

A shocking incident on the TF-1 motorway in the south of Tenerife has gone viral, drawing widespread attention and concern. A video shared on Instagram by user Katy (@woman_3.0) shows someone recklessly riding an electric scooter along one of the island's busiest roads, the TF-1, near Siam Mall with no helmet on.

The footage, which quickly gained traction online, has left many viewers stunned by the dangerous behaviour displayed by the rider.

The video shows the scooter rider boldly navigating the highway, seemingly oblivious to the serious risks posed to both themselves and other motorists. The scene has sparked a mix of outrage and disbelief, with comments highlighting the potential dangers and disruptions caused by such reckless actions.

In Spain, electric scooters, classified as Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMPs), are subject to strict regulations set by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT). These vehicles are prohibited from being ridden on pavements, in pedestrian zones, through urban tunnels, and, crucially, on highways, interurban roads, and motorways. VMPs are limited to specific urban areas, and their speed must not exceed 25 km/h.

Legal Consequences and Public Safety

Riding an electric scooter on a highway like the TF-1 is not only a perilous act but also a serious violation of traffic laws. Offenders can face fines of up to €500 for operating on unauthorised roads, a penalty designed to deter such dangerous behaviour. The risks of an accident in these circumstances are high, with potentially fatal consequences.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic regulations designed to protect all road users. The decision to ride a scooter on a high-speed road like the TF-1 not only endangers the rider’s life but also poses a threat to the safety of other drivers, contributing to traffic disruptions and potentially severe accidents.
