How would you like to own a genuine castle in Tenerife? Well, you can, however, it comes with a price tag of 3.2 million euros and needs to be fully renovated.
Castillo de San Joaquín is an ancient fort built in 1586 to defend the Island from pirates and corsairs, located in Villa Benítez next to the Mirador de Vistabella in between Santa Cruz and La Laguna, in the north of Tenerife.
It is a construction of 1,586m2 on a plot of 4,400m2 which was renovated to be used as a castle in 1780, with a single entrance that leads to a courtyard that accesses the four cylindrical towers and the rectangular buildings that connect the towers.
The Castillo de San Joaquín has had several uses over the years and at one point was even a military prison, but it’s layout and external appearance have remained unchanged, although it is currently practically in ruins. The building was owned by the Ministry of Defence until 1996, when, after a public auction, a private individual bought it.
The seller of the castle says that there is a renovation project passed on the building, to either make it a private residence or a hotel with 40 rooms. "When entering the castle, you get a feeling of safety, privacy, and protection”, says the vendor, emphasizing that "no one has ever demolished it, which is testament to how much of a stable building it is."
