In the early hours of yesterday morning, Friday, residents of Calle Tenderete in Arrecife's Argana Alta neighbourhood faced yet another sewage system collapse.
This incident adds to a string of recent water system failures in the area, overseen by Canal Gestión Lanzarote, the firm managing the islands entire water system.
This latest breakdown follows similar issues from a different street last October and November, all within the same problematic sewage network. These recurring problems have sparked concern among locals and city officials about the infrastructure's reliability.
Last autumn, Arrecife City Council called on Canal Gestión Lanzarote to conduct an external audit of the sewage system's condition in the capital. The audit is expected to detail maintenance activities, breakdowns, damages, and any investments made. This request is part of the legal obligations following the transfer of management from the Lanzarote Water Consortium to Canal Gestión.
The Mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, responsible for Public Works, reiterated this demand at a recent Water Consortium Assembly meeting. He stressed that the continuous breakdowns highlight significant issues with the system's maintenance.
The mayor is urging the Water Consortium to ensure Canal Gestión fulfils its commitment to provide the much-needed audit, a step that was confirmed in the Consortium's latest meetings.
