Local Police in Mogán, Gran Canaria, have arrested a man following a high-risk pursuit after he was caught driving the wrong way on the GC-1 motorway in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The man did not hold a driving licence, tested positive for drugs, and endangered numerous vehicles during the incident.

According to police sources, the events began around 1:30 am on 29th July, when officers patrolling the GC-500 towards Tauro encountered a vehicle driving in the opposite direction. The patrol had to swerve to avoid a head-on collision, and shortly after, another police car faced the same threat. Due to the gravity of the situation, a pursuit was launched.

The driver continued recklessly, entering the GC-1 motorway at Puerto Rico and heading toward Playa de Mogán, again in the wrong direction. During the chase, several vehicles had to swerve out of the way, including a bus whose driver made a quick turn to avoid a collision.

Despite police using sirens and flashing lights to signal the driver to stop, he ignored all warnings and continued to flee dangerously along the motorway, placing everyone on the road at risk.

The pursuit came to a head near the junction between the GC-1 and GC-200, where the man attempted to turn again and head back toward Las Palmas, still against traffic.

In a controlled intervention, officers deliberately struck the rear of the fleeing vehicle with their patrol car, bringing it to a safe stop with only minor damage.

The driver then tried to flee on foot but was quickly caught by police. He resisted arrest and assaulted one of the officers before being restrained and taken into custody.

A drug test later confirmed the presence of THC, the active compound in cannabis, and checks with Spain’s traffic authority (DGT) revealed the man had never held a driving licence.

He was taken to the Guardia Civil station in Puerto Rico and now faces multiple serious charges, including reckless driving, driving under the influence of drugs, driving without a licence, resisting arrest, and assaulting a police officer.
