A forest fire that broke out on Monday afternoon in the northwestern area of Tenerife was quickly brought under control thanks to a major emergency response, preventing what officials say could have been a serious environmental disaster.
The fire started in El Tanque at around 2:00pm and was stabilised within nine hours. By Tuesday evening, it was fully under control after burning 81 hectares of dry shrubland. Tenerife Cabildo President Rosa Dávila praised the speed and professionalism of all those involved, saying their efforts “avoided a potential catastrophe.”
More than 80 emergency workers took part in the operation, supported by nine aircraft, eight helicopters and one plane. Teams included local and volunteer firefighters, Brifor forest units, the Spanish Army, Guardia Civil, Canary Islands Police, Local Police from El Tanque and Santiago del Teide, the Red Cross, and Civil Protection services.
As part of long-term prevention, the island government has approved €500,000 in funding through to 2027 to improve 2,000 kilometres of forest access tracks. This includes clearing dry vegetation, strengthening slopes, and improving paths so emergency vehicles can respond quickly in future incidents.
Although the official fire risk alert has been lifted, the island remains on high alert. Fire teams are continuing to monitor the forests closely, especially with more hot weather on the way.
Weather Outlook
After several days of extreme heat across the Canary Islands, where temperatures reached 40°C, things have slightly cooled. However, another heatwave is expected to arrive early next week.
Temperatures are forecast to rise again, especially in the mid-altitude southern areas of the islands, where they could go above 35°C. Gran Canaria is likely to feel the worst of the heat.
Safety Reminder
Authorities are asking both residents and visitors to be extra careful in rural and forested areas. Avoid lighting fires, barbecues, or throwing cigarette butts, especially while temperatures remain high and the ground is dry.
