A group of young people enjoying an afternoon of fishing got more than they bargained for yesterday, Tuesday, when they accidentally hooked a small hammerhead shark off the coast of Arrieta, in the north of Lanzarote.

The unexpected catch happened around 7:00pm at the small harbour (known locally as the muellito) in the coastal village of Haría. After feeling a strong tug on the line, the group initially believed they had caught a large fish. What they reeled in, however, left them stunned, a hammerhead shark had wandered unusually close to the shore.

Although hammerhead sharks are generally harmless and rarely pose a threat to humans unless provoked, the incident caused a stir among beachgoers.

Some swimmers and sunbathers chose to err on the side of caution, packing up their belongings and leaving the area. “Better not to push our luck,” one local said.

Experts note that occasional sightings of marine wildlife, including sharks, can occur around the Canary Islands, but such close encounters remain rare. The young anglers quickly released the shark safely back into the water unharmed.
