El Médano has once again cemented its place on the international water sports map with the official launch of the Playa Surf Tenerife El Médano Windsurf Grand Slam 2025, a major stop on the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) World Tour.

The prestigious event will run from 1st to 10th August at the iconic Playa del Cabezo in Granadilla de Abona, in southern Tenerife.

The launch event was held yesterday morning (Wednesday) at Playa Surf CBbC Hotels and featured local officials, sponsors, and elite windsurfers already training on the island ahead of the competition.

This year's edition promises to be a landmark event, featuring both men’s and women’s Wave disciplines and, for the first time ever, Slalom X, an exciting new category. More than 140 professional athletes from 20 countries are expected to compete, confirming Tenerife's status as a world-class hub for sports tourism.

Winds, Waves, and Local Passion

Event organiser and professional windsurfer Dani Bruch highlighted the unique appeal of El Médano:

“It’s one of the few urban beaches on the tour that offers the right combination of wind and waves, alongside a community that truly embraces the sport. Our goal is not just to host a world-class competition, but to create a festival atmosphere that brings everyone together. The strong local support is what really makes this event special.”

Economic and Cultural Impact

Local mayor José Domingo Regalado underlined the broader importance of the event:

“The Grand Slam has a significant impact beyond sport—it boosts our economy, tourism, and sense of community. Over these ten days, El Médano becomes a global meeting point for windsurfing fans, athletes, and media alike.”

Eco-Initiatives and Community Involvement

Marcos Antonio Rodríguez, councillor for Municipal Services and Environment, announced a sustainability initiative through local public company SERMUGRAN:

“All paper and cardboard collected during the event will be recycled through our ‘From Blue to Green’ programme, with the proceeds used to purchase trees for planting around the municipality.”

Beyond the competition itself, the Grand Slam will offer a full programme of cultural events, live music, gastronomy stalls, and sustainability talks, reinforcing the organisers' commitment to environmental awareness and community involvement.

Organisers have expressed their gratitude to everyone for their support and extended an invitation to both locals and tourists to enjoy ten unforgettable days blending sport, nature, and culture in one of Tenerife’s most vibrant coastal towns.
