Several flights scheduled to land at Tenerife North Airport have been diverted to Tenerife South today (Wednesday) due to poor weather conditions.
According to air traffic controllers, low cloud and poor visibility have led to disrupted approaches, holding patterns, and flight crews opting to divert to alternative airports.
So far, at least four domestic and inter-island flights have landed in the south instead.
Tenerife North Airport is especially vulnerable to weather-related disruptions because of its location in the island’s highlands, where low clouds and sudden fog are common — especially in the cooler, humid conditions typical of the north.
These factors often reduce visibility, making safe landings more difficult, particularly for smaller inter-island aircraft that rely on visual approach conditions.
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) reported cloudy skies across the north of the island today, with some clearer periods expected during midday hours. The rest of the island is experiencing mostly clear skies, with patchy clouds in the west and south, and a slight chance of haze at higher altitudes.
Travellers flying today are advised to check the status of their flights on the AENA website before heading to the airport.
