Several towns in Tenerife have introduced water-saving rules as the island faces another hot, dry summer. Even though this spring was wetter and the island’s water tanks are nearly full, an emergency drought alert from May 2024 is still in place, and local councils are acting early to avoid shortages.

Although the situation is less dire than last year, thanks to a significantly wetter spring that has left the island’s 23 agricultural irrigation reservoirs managed by the Cabildo at around 85% capacity, authorities remain cautious.

Where Are the Bans?
The restrictions apply in these towns and their surrounding areas:

  • Los Silos – including La Caleta, Pina I & II, San Bernardo, Tierra del Trigo, and Erjos
  • San Juan de la Rambla
  • La Guancha
  • Buenavista del Norte

What’s Banned?
In these areas, residents and visitors are not allowed to use drinking water to:

  • Fill swimming pools
  • Wash cars (except at water-efficient car washes)
  • Water gardens, plants, or farmland
  • Clean streets, pavements, walls, or buildings
  • Take more than 20 litres per person from public fountains (San Juan de la Rambla)

Why Now?
Even with reservoirs 85% full, officials are worried about high temperatures and dry conditions returning. These rules help protect the island’s water supply.

Fixing Leaks Saves Water Too
In Los Silos, the local council used special equipment to find underground leaks. They fixed 39 problem spots, saving enough water each year to fill nearly 50 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

In the Capital
In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a burst pipe on Calle Castillo has left parts of the city centre without water. Repairs are ongoing on Calle Cruz Verde and Calle Imeldo Serís.

What Tourists Should Know
Hotels, pools, and beaches are open and operating normally. But everyone is asked to help save water by using only what’s needed — every drop counts!
