A 34-year-old man has been arrested in the port of Las Palmas after being caught attempting to extract packages of cocaine from a ship that had arrived from Brazil.

The arrest took place on 23rd July during routine inspection duties and resulted in the seizure of 101 kilograms of cocaine.

Officers from the Port Police and Guardia Civil spotted a diver in the water near the hull of a vessel recently docked from Brazil. The man was unable to justify his presence in the restricted area.

Shortly afterwards, agents noticed several suspicious packages floating near the ship. These turned out to be waterproof bags containing compressed blocks of cocaine. Authorities confirmed that the drugs had been removed from the vessel before the diver was caught.

Following the discovery, the diver was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking and taken into custody. He was later brought before the duty court in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where the judge ordered his immediate placement in provisional detention pending further investigation.
