The long-awaited renovation of Corralejo’s seafront promenade has sparked controversy, with two formal complaints filed by local hospitality businesses who claim the project is harming their operations.
Despite being approved by Spain’s Coastal Authority (Costas) and financed through European funds, the project, which aims to create a pedestrian-friendly walkway linking Corralejo’s port with the Natural Park of the Dunes, has drawn criticism from some business owners.
They argue that the redesign reduces the space available to their outdoor terraces, which have long benefited from access to public land.
One of the complaints was filed by the owner of Waikiki, a beachfront restaurant and bar, who alleges that the new promenade encroaches on his business space. The area in question includes tables and chairs placed in a public zone next to the beach, which the business currently occupies under a four-year municipal permit.
The owner is also unhappy about the planned removal of a wall that currently acts as a windbreak for his terrace, arguing that the changes will negatively impact his business. However, local authorities insist that both the beach and the adjacent roundabout are public property and fall within their jurisdiction.
A second complaint has been filed with the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office by the owner of Patai Beach, another restaurant in the area. He accuses the local council of administrative misconduct, claiming that the redevelopment project has been used to benefit certain establishments over others. He argues that the redistribution of space following the renovation is unjust and “disproportionately favours” specific businesses.
