More than a quarter of British tourists (26%) have visited the Canary Islands at least ten times, while eight in ten are repeat visitors, according to figures presented by the Canarian Minister of Tourism and Employment, Jéssica de León, in a parliamentary session ahead of next week’s World Travel Market (WTM) in London.

De León highlighted the significance of the UK market for the archipelago, noting that 70% of Brits who travel to Spain choose the Canary Islands as their destination. “Our islands are performing at full capacity as a top choice for UK holidaymakers,” she said.

High spending and satisfaction levels

Each British tourist spends an average of €1,472 per trip, or €191 per day, during an eight-day stay, generating approximately €8 billion in revenue for the islands.

According to data from the regional Tourism Department, British visitors report exceptionally high satisfaction, scoring their trips 9 out of 10, with 42% saying their experience exceeded expectations.

Focus on active and sustainable tourism

At the upcoming WTM in London, the Canary Islands will promote not only their beaches and year-round sunshine but also their growing appeal for active, sports, and nature-based tourism. Around 24% of British travellers look for holidays that include outdoor physical activities.

De León pointed out that the Canary Islands lead Spain in this sector, with 1,204 active tourism companies and up to 6,000 direct jobs during peak seasons such as summer and Easter.

The Canarian delegation will also showcase its commitment to climate action and sustainable tourism, including initiatives such as Lanzarote’s Sustainable Tourism Charter +30.

“The Canary Islands’ presence at the World Travel Market is not only about attracting more visitors,” said De León, “but about reinforcing our position as a competitive, responsible, and sustainable destination, and supporting the many Canarian businesses attending to create new opportunities.”
