Airport operator AENA has confirmed that the complete redevelopment of the terminal at Tenerife South Airport (TFS) will be put out to tender this year, once the final project is completed in March and environmental procedures begin.

The upgrade will be accompanied by a new multi-storey car park, designed to integrate seamlessly with the future Tren del Sur (South Train) transport system.

Aim is to improve passenger experience

The full redesign of Tenerife South’s terminal building aims to significantly improve passenger flow, capacity and comfort. Key measures include:

  • Optimised operational processes
  • Expansion of terminal space
  • Deployment of new technologies
  • Architectural integration of the entire terminal and its surroundings

AENA states that these improvements will allow the airport to meet both current demand and future growth, while delivering a more efficient and modern travel experience.

Tenerife North Airport also set for major expansion

The redevelopment of Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport will respect the building’s architectural identity while expanding its functional capacity. Planned upgrades include:

  • Larger check-in area and more counters
  • Expanded security screening in the airport’s iconic central space
  • Additional boarding gates
  • Enlarged baggage reclaim hall with more conveyor belts
  • Upgrades to short-stay and long-stay parking, rental car areas, staff parking and public transport zones
  • Improvements to access routes, coordinated with the TF-5 upgrade project

AENA expects the construction project to be finalised this year, with the tender process likely to begin in 2027 after environmental approval.

Cabildo welcomes Tenerife’s long-awaited airport upgrades

AENA outlined the plans during a meeting with the Tenerife Cabildo, and also presented a record investment package of €867 million for the island’s two airports between 2027 and 2031.

The announced sum is more than double the investment made between 2017 and 2025 (€335.69 million). Of the €867 million total, €553.6 million will be allocated to Tenerife South Airport alone, far exceeding the €68.9 million invested during 2022–2026.

For Tenerife North Airport (TFN), AENA has planned €313.4 million for the 2027–2031 period, compared to €67.8 million during the previous five years.

Rosa Dávila, President of the Cabildo, highlighted the “strategic alliance” with AENA to ensure the airport expansions respond to the island’s mobility needs while integrating with upcoming transport systems such as the Tren del Sur and future northern tram extension.

Key mobility initiatives include:

  • Creation of new intermodal hubs linking buses, taxis, trams and trains
  • Reduction of private car use through improved public transport connections
  • Construction of a tunnel or underground cavern to house the Tren del Sur station at Tenerife South Airport
  • Redesign of TF-1 access points and a full reorganisation of airport parking areas, with an additional €300 million invested by the Cabildo

The combined airport and transport upgrades mark one of the largest infrastructure commitments in Tenerife’s recent history, set to reshape the island’s connectivity through to 2031 and beyond.
