A 30-year-old woman has been arrested in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on suspicion of killing her 20-month-old daughter, after she was found wandering the streets with the baby’s lifeless body late last night (Wednesday).
The incident unfolded around 10:00pm in the coastal neighbourhoods of Hoya de la Plata and San Cristóbal, where several passers-by noticed the woman walking in a distressed and disoriented state, holding an unresponsive, wet infant. Alarmed, they immediately alerted emergency services.
SUC Paramedics and units from the National Police Homicide and Scientific teams arrived and found the woman next to the child’s body, which had been placed on a flowerbed. Despite attempts by medics to resuscitate the girl, she could not be revived and was taken to the Materno Infantil Hospital, where her death was confirmed.
The mother is a Venezuelan national. She was arrested on suspicion of homicide.
Early lines of investigation suggest the child may have been drowned in the sea near the fishing district of San Cristóbal, although detectives stress that the inquiry remains open and all circumstances are still being examined. The case has now been taken over by the Juvenile and Child Protection Court in Las Palmas, and proceedings are under a strict reporting ban.
Police are expected to release further details as the investigation progresses.
