Body of missing holidaymaker found after three-day search
Emergency teams in Tenerife have confirmed the death of a 35-year-old German woman who went missing on Thursday near the Mirador de Hilda, in the rugged Macizo de Teno. After three days of continuous searching across some of the island’s steepest and most inaccessible terrain, her body was discovered shortly after 12:30 pm on Saturday.
The area she was found in is part of the route linking Santiago del Teide with Masca, an area admired for its scenery but well-known for its dangerous cliffs and unpredictable conditions. The alarm was raised at around 9:15 pm on Thursday, leding to a major search operation coordinated by the Guardia Civil. Specialist mountain rescue officers from GREIM and environmental officers from Seprona were also sent, along with the Local Police. They were supported by the Volunteer Firefighters of Santiago del Teide and professional firefighters based in Guía de Isora, who combed the area metre by metre. The deep ravines and unstable ground made progress extremely difficult.
On Friday, teams worked from early morning until nightfall, but deteriorating visibility and the treacherous nature of the terrain forced them to halt the search overnight. Efforts resumed at first light on Saturday, and a few hours later the woman was found lifeless in the same area where she was last seen. The exact circumstances of what happened have not yet been confirmed.
Emergency services and volunteer associations have expressed their condolences to the woman’s family and friends after what they described as a devastating conclusion to the search. The Mirador de Hilda area, while popular with tourists for its breathtaking views, has long been known for its steep paths, loose surfaces and sudden weather changes, all of which can make hiking hazardous even for experienced walkers.
