A 35-year-old woman from Fuerteventura has discovered that she was handed to the wrong family as a newborn, and is now demanding answers from the regional health authorities about how such a life-changing mistake could have happened.

The woman, who was born at the Hospital General de Fuerteventura, was raised by parents who, she has now learned through DNA tests, are not her biological family. Her legal representative, Rioja-based lawyer José Sáez Morga, explained that his client ordered genetic testing in late 2025 after long-held suspicions. The results confirmed that her DNA does not match that of the parents who raised her.

According to Sáez Morga, the case appears to be “a clear error of identification and delivery to a non-biological family,” backed up by both DNA results and blood-group analysis that do not correspond to the records given at the time of her birth.

In November last year, the lawyer formally requested action from the Servicio Canario de Salud (SCS) via the Directorate-General of Public Health. However, he says that months later, they are still waiting for any response or clarification from the authorities.

“We have presented all the documentation, but we haven’t heard anything,” he said, adding that the case now sits with the Directorate-General, which is expected to determine what happened and who was present at the hospital when the mix-up occurred. He stressed that neither his client nor the legal team is looking to blame individual staff members, but rather to uncover the truth.

The case echoes other high-profile incidents of newborn mix-ups in Spain. Sáez Morga also represents one of the two young women involved in a 2002 baby-swap case in Logroño, where the courts recently upheld a compensation award of €975,000 to one of the affected girls. He is also handling similar claims in Guadalajara and Barcelona.

For now, the woman from Fuerteventura continues to wait for an official explanation, more than three decades after the mistake that changed the course of her life.
